Iran has launched two missiles toward Cyprus, where United Kingdom military bases are located, escalating tensions in the Middle East. The news was confirmed by UK Defence Secretary John Healey.

Cyprus hosts two sovereign UK military bases, RAF Akrotiri and Dhekelia, which play a strategic role in Western operations in the region. Healey emphasized that, according to initial assessments, these bases were not the intended targets of the attack.

“We are fairly confident that they were not targeting our bases,” he stated, adding that the incident “shows how uncontrolled” Iran’s retaliatory response has become.

Several American bases in the Middle East have reportedly been targeted with missiles and drones, while United States has raised its level of military readiness.

The developments come after the United States and Israel carried out waves of air and missile strikes on targets in Iran, describing them as preventive actions aimed at damaging Tehran’s military infrastructure and strategic capabilities.

Healey reiterated the British government’s call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions, urging Iran “to step back from its increasingly uncontrolled and indiscriminate attacks in the region” and “to abandon its weapons programs.”
