One person has lost their life and 39 others have been injured, one of them seriously, following a major tram accident in Milan.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle — which had entered service only a few weeks earlier — derailed and ended up crashing into a shop. At the time of the accident, the tram was full of passengers, most of whom suffered injuries as a result of the impact and the fall inside the vehicle.
The victim was pulled from underneath the tram and is believed to have been a pedestrian walking on the sidewalk at the moment of the accident.
Videos of the moment when the tram left the tracks and crashed into the building have circulated on social media, causing panic among residents.
The Chief Prosecutor of Milan, Marcello Viola, arrived at the scene and is expected to open a case for negligent homicide in order to fully clarify the circumstances and causes of the accident.
