Several Iranian state media outlets are confirming the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“The Supreme Leader of Iran has achieved martyrdom,” the state broadcaster IRIB reported on Sunday morning, A2 CNN reports.
“This great scholar and mujahid (fighter) sacrificed his life to elevate Iran… and he is now in the exalted presence of the martyrs,” said the state-affiliated Mehr News Agency.
Iran declared 40 days of national mourning following the death of the Supreme Leader.
The announcement comes after the United States and Israel said that Khamenei was killed following a wave of joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on the country. (A2 Television)
