Kosovo is set to enter a period of political instability following Sunday’s elections, where Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s Self-Determination Movement (LVV) lost its majority, according to prominent journalist Berat Buzhala.
Despite LVV declaring victory with more than 40% of the vote, Buzhala pointed out that the party suffered a significant loss in public support compared to the 2021 elections. He attributes this decline to multiple corruption scandals and tense relations with Kosovo’s international allies.
“Kurti went into the elections seeking 500,000 votes and an absolute majority, but based on the counted votes, he has won 39.8%, while the other Albanian opposition parties have won 48%,” Buzhala wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to preliminary results, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) secured second place with over 20%, followed by the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) with 18%, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK)–Nisma coalition with 7.6%. Meanwhile, Srpska Lista obtained 5.4% of the vote, presumably securing all 10 seats reserved for the Serbian community in the Kosovo Assembly.
Buzhala warned that Kurti’s failure to secure an outright majority leaves Kosovo at a political crossroads.

He also highlighted that the key to forming a stable coalition lies with the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, led by Ramush Haradinaj. According to Buzhala, “Three opposition parties have ruled out the possibility of forming a coalition with Kurti’s LVV, and Kurti himself has also ruled out that possibility.”
The situation became even more tense following Kurti’s controversial remarks on election night. “He has declared that if he doesn’t win an absolute majority, he will go into opposition. Furthermore, during a strange outburst this evening, Kurti referred to opposition members as ‘hajvan,’ which in Turkish means ‘animals’,” Buzhala added.
Buzhala concluded by predicting a turbulent period ahead for Kosovo’s political landscape. “Kosovo will now enter a period of political instability,” he warned.
